We want to make our school community aware of an incident that occurred this morning that sickened four 3rd-grade students.

At about 11 a.m. Wednesday, four students at North Broadway Elementary were evaluated by a school nurse after they reported feeling ill after consuming a food product that may have contained THC, the controlled, active ingredient found in marijuana. Emergency responders were called to the school as a precaution, and the students were taken to a hospital for further evaluation.

The wide accessibility and commercialization of “edibles” – food products infused with THC – is cause for concern in school communities across the state, including our own. The health, safety, and well-being of our students is always a top priority.

Edible cannabis products are easily mistaken for regular candy or food, and can be eaten without the individual knowing the product’s true ingredients. Cannabis food products such as gummy bears, lollipops, or brownies are designed and packaged to look like popular brands of regular candy or baked goods, making them especially appealing to children.

We ask for your help in ensuring the health and safety of all students. Please speak with your child about the dangers of edibles, and about accepting such food items from classmates or older friends. EUSD works tirelessly to keep our students safe and our schools free of alcohol, tobacco, vape devices, and drugs, including illegally used and over-the-counter and prescription drugs. Together, we can keep our students safe through open dialogue and education. Please review this important cannabis safety guidance from the California Department of Public Health.

We want to take this opportunity to reiterate that it is not legal for students to possess, ingest, provide, or be under the influence of edibles at school or at any school-related activity or event. In all cases involving edibles, students will be subject to disciplinary consequences.
