teacher leaning in with kindergartners in pollinator garden

May 29, 2023

In EUSD, every student is an Effective Communicator and Critical Thinker! These are the final two of the six whole-learner outcomes that we’ve introduced to you over the past few weeks. These learner outcomes comprise the new EUSD Learner Profile in our Blueprint for the Future.

An Effective Communicator is an effective listener and can clearly express ideas. A Critical Thinker is an inquisitive learner who can reflectively and critically analyze information.

In our schools, students as Effective Communicators communicate with purpose and express coherent ideas; are receptive and responsive to others’ input and ideas; communicate with confidence across various media and maintain a responsible digital footprint; and communicate with an awareness of audience and context. In EUSD, students as Critical Thinkers ask questions with confidence and seek to understand how the world works; demonstrate mastery of essential knowledge and skills through reflection and revision of my thinking; and are willing to reconsider personal views when presented with a compelling perspective.

As we prepare to launch the Blueprint for the Future for the 2023-2024 school year, our students demonstrate the characteristics of Effective Communicators and Critical Thinkers in countless ways every day. Kindergarten teacher Anita Roberts leads her Juniper students on a bug hunt in the pollinator garden. These kindergartners aren’t afraid of bugs; instead they understand how pollinators like bumblebees, ladybugs, and spiders are important for the health of our Earth. Not only are they able to comprehend these concepts, they communicate their knowledge through drawing and writing in their journals. This is just one glimpse of the extraordinary teaching and learning that shape our students into Effective Communicators and Critical Thinkers.
