Set start date!

1 Applications to multiple job opportunities increase chances of success.  Reference classification descriptions for the job(s) you apply for to review the background requirements.

2 Testing often consists of two test parts, one of which is a scored Qualifications Appraisal Interview.

3 Candidates who pass each phase of the pre-employment testing process will be placed onto the eligibility list in rank order, based on overall test scores.  Eligibility lists are used for a period for 1 year until ranks are exhausted, unless otherwise stated in the recruitment posting on EdJoin.  Ranks will continue to be certified to hiring managers throughout the lifetime of the eligibility list.

4 The top three ranks of the eligibility list are certified out to a hiring manager for final interviews.  For classifications with several vacant positions, multiple ranks will be certified for interview.  Reference checks are normally conducted during this step.

5 Candidates selected by a hiring manager for tentative job offer will be sent for pre-employment clearances, including fingerprinting, TB test and pre-employment physical.  Reference checks  may also continue to be completed during this step.

6 If all pre-employment results meet district requirements, the final step is the completion of a hiring packet (i.e., I-9, W-4, direct deposit form) and a final confirmation of a start date.

Tips for the Application and Testing Process

1) Apply for multiple opportunities – as many as you would consider!

Participating in the testing process for multiple job opportunities provides more potential job opportunities for being hired.  Even if you aren’t offered your first choice position, you will have more opportunities to apply for other positions.  Many EUSD employees promote or transfer throughout their career with us.

*Note: Due to confidentiality requirements, hiring administrators are not informed of the final rank of the top three candidates they interview when filling a position.  Therefore, you can’t assume that being ranked 1 on the eligibility list will automatically mean you will receive a job offer the first time you interview for a vacant position.

2) Read the class description!!

Review the class description for each application you plan to submit.  Many candidates skip this step.  The class description lists typical job duties of the classification and the type of knowledge, skills and abilities required for the role.  Importantly, the class description also describes the ‘Typical Background’ required of candidates who apply.  For example, are any certifications or licenses required?  Do you possess the type and length of experience needed to be considered?

3) Fill out the application

Many applicants leave large blanks in their employment application, even within the ‘Work Experience’ portion.  Keep in mind, your application is your first chance to make an impression on the school district.  The work experience listed in the application is often the primary information relied upon to determine whether an applicant will be screened into the testing process.  Therefore, be sure to fill out information about your most recent/current jobs.

Do NOT attach a resume in lieu of completing the application.

Keep in mind that once you create a profile in EdJoin that includes your personal information, education and experience, you can save your profile for submission to other job opportunities.  This means that once you submit your first application, subsequent applications will likely be much faster to complete.

  • Resumes & Letters of Introduction:  Unless otherwise specified, resumes and letters of introduction are not required to be attached to the application but are always welcome.  These materials are primarily reviewed by a hiring authority during a final interview of candidates from the eligibility list.

  • Job References & Letters of Recommendation: List current and prior supervisors as your job references on the application form.  This can include a supervisor of a volunteer job as well.  Do not rely on coworkers who did not supervise you as a job reference.  At least one of the references you list on your application should be your current supervisor.

  • Letters of Recommendation are not required unless otherwise specified and are primarily reviewed by a hiring authority during a final interview of candidates from the eligibility list.

  • Answer supplemental questions within the application that ask for additional information regarding your experience, training, certifications, education, and other job-related skills.  The responses to these supplemental questions will be considered along with your experience, training and education to determine which candidates are invited to the testing process, or alternatively may be scored as a standalone test part.

4) Practice in advance

Interviews are conducted for virtually every job classification, so this is a great skill to practice.  Prepare yourself to talk about your relevant experience, training and skills.  Also consider any other skills you may want to practice in preparation for testing, as well as areas of knowledge you can learn or study.  The Classified Personnel Department cannot provide any information about test content, so read the class description as part of your preparation process for any potential test parts.

5) Try, Try Again

Don’t be discouraged if you aren’t successful your first time through the process.

  1. If you are certified to an interview with a hiring manager but aren’t selected right away, *keep participating in interviews with other hiring managers.  You will continue to be considered by other hiring managers as vacancies arise until you expire from the eligibility list.

  2. If you don’t pass a test part, you can reach out to the Classified Personnel Department for feedback so you have information about skills you can improve upon before applying again.

  3. If you are not screened in for testing the first time you apply, look into opportunities to gain additional experience or training that may qualify you to participate at a future time.
