Dual Language Immersion Program

In a global society, the ability to speak more than one language is essential for our future leaders. That’s why EUSD is pleased to offer the Dual Language Immersion Program at four elementary schools: Farr Avenue, Glen View, Lincoln, and Pioneer.

In addition, students may continue on their pathway to biliteracy at Mission Middle School. Beginning in fall 2019, the Dual Language Immersion Program will be offered at Mission for students who meet the criteria. These students will take their Social Studies class in Spanish, and an elective of Spanish Literacy that includes reading Spanish literature and writing essays in Spanish.

A research-based instructional model

Our program begins in Kindergarten and follows an instructional model that is designed to promote bilingualism, biliteracy, and biculturalism for students whose primary language is English, as well as those whose primary language is Spanish. This model calls for the delivery of instruction at the following ratios based on grade level:

  • Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten
    90 percent Spanish / 10 percent English

  • 1st Grade
    80 percent Spanish / 20 percent English

  • 2nd Grade
    70 percent Spanish / 30 percent English

  • 3rd Grade
    60 percent Spanish / 40 percent English

  • 4th Grade
    50 percent Spanish / 50 percent English

  • 5th Grade
    50 percent Spanish / 50 percent English
